Celebrating Asian Heritage Month in May

With the motto of “Together. Better.” the Waterloo Region Chinese Canadian Association is committed to promoting multiculturalism and prosperity, serving the local Chinese community, and advocating for the interests of the Chinese community in the region.

The Central Ontario Chinese Cultural Centre (COCCC) is a non-profit, charitable organization founded in 1973, and incorporated in 1980.

The Waterloo Region Japanese Canadian Community Association provides support for members of the local Japanese community, and nurtures Japanese language and culture in children of Japanese descent and others who might be interested in Japanese culture. Visit their Facebook page here.

The India Canada Association of Waterloo Region‘s mission is to preserve and promote the rich and diverse cultural heritage of India; “to foster collaboration among people of Indian origin and broader Canadian community”; to advocate and ensure effective representation of members in social, political and cultural life for the benefit of our community at large.

The Tamil Cultural Association of Waterloo Region promotes and nurtures local Tamil culture, and provide understanding of the culture to all Canadians.

The National Film Board of Canada’s Asian Communities in Canada collection is a curated selection of films that celebrate the many achievements and contributions of Canadians of Asian descent who, throughout history, have done so much to make Canada the culturally diverse, compassionate and prosperous nation it is today.

These short biographies on the Government of Canada’s website highlight some of the many valuable contributions made by Canadians of Asian heritage. They reflect historical and cultural milestones that help define the rich and significant history of communities of Asian heritage in Canada.

Since the late-1700s, people of Asian origin have made important contributions to Canada’s history and identity. Each year, as part of its annual Asian Heritage Month campaign, the Government of Canada encourages all people in Canada to learn about how people of Asian origin have and continue to help shape Canada as we know it today.
