Diwali, or Deepavali (“row of lights”), is the festival of lights; it marks the victory of good over evil. Diwali is observed in many countries around the world and within the religions of Hinduism, Jainism and Sikhism. Celebrations differ across regions and traditions; it often includes the lighting of diyas (oil lamps), candles and lanterns, along with visiting with family and friends and feasting. Diwali occurs in the fall, on the darkest day during the Hindu month of Kartik (mid-October to mid-November).
